What is the Apprentice Employment Network?
The Apprentice Employment Network is Queensland’s and the Northern Territory’s largest employer network of apprentices and trainees. The network comprises over 6000 apprentices and trainees, 28 Apprentice Employment Network Members, 400 skilled staff and over 10,000 host employers.
Apprentice Employment Network Members operate under an arrangement called “Group Training” where the Member employs apprentices and trainees under an Apprenticeship / Traineeship Training Contract and places them with host employers.
An Apprentice Employment Network Member assumes the employer responsibilities for the quality and continuity of the apprentices’ and trainees’ employment and training. The Member also manages the additional care and support necessary to achieve the successful completion of the training contract.
Some of the benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship / traineeship through an Apprentice Employment Network Member are:
- You get paid while you learn;
- You will not be unemployed if work with a particular host employer runs out as because you are employed by the Member who will find you another placement to continue your apprenticeship / traineeship;
- You have the flexibility to rotate host employers;
- Your wage and allowances are paid by the Member in accordance to Awards and other agreements;
- All of the administration and government paperwork is handled by the Member;
- Your training is arranged by the Member;
- Your safety equipment will be provided to you by the Member before you start work;
- You are allocated a Field Officer who will be able to help you if you have any issues or need any further information.
What are Apprenticeships and Traineeships?
Apprenticeships and traineeships offer the ability to ‘learn and earn’ from day one.
They combine training and paid employment, leading to skills and qualifications that are recognised across Australia and by other employers in the industry.
Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time, part-time or school-based and are available to anyone of working age.
You can be a school student, a school-leaver, re-entering the workforce or simply wishing to change careers.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are available in a variety of certificate levels in more than 300 occupations across Australia, in traditional trades, as well as a diverse range of emerging careers in most sectors of business and industry.
Apprenticeships generally last four years and cover traditional trade areas such as: building and construction; hairdressing; cooking; electrical; automotive; engineering and manufacturing etc.
Traineeships generally cover a much wider range of occupations than apprenticeships; however the training is usually shorter, lasting between one and two years. Both apprenticeships and traineeships are easily linked to further vocational education and university studies.

What does an Apprentice or Trainee get paid?
Apprentices and trainees are generally covered by the same employment conditions as other employees employed under an industry award. However, they are also subject to the conditions of their training contract. The training contract is an agreement that the apprentice or trainee and their employer sign detailing the workplace based training that will be provided. It also confirms any off-the-job training which is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation.
